How to Start Your Own Bucket List

By Janelle G.Some people may be under the impression that bucket lists are for older people (thanks in part to the movie The Bucket List with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman). But this couldn’t be further from the truth. Anyone of any age can start creating a bucket list. In fact, the younger a person is when they create their list, the more likely it is they’ll have more time to accomplish the things on their list.

So, ready to start the bucket list that could change your life, but not sure how to go about it? Here are some ideas to help get you started:

1. What simple things have you always wanted to try?

2. What have you always wanted to learn? Languages? Dances? Any particular recipes?

3. Which places would you most like to visit on vacation?

4. What sports/activities/hobbies have you always wanted try and just haven’t?

5. What major sporting events do you enjoy? How about experiencing that in person?

6. Have you ever wanted to do anything extreme?

7. Are the any celebrities in particular that you’d like to meet?

8. What kind contributions would you like to make?

9. What charities are you most moved to support?

10. If you were a millionaire, what would you be doing right now? Is there any of those things you can do/start now regardless of money?

Other ways to come up with some ideas for your list is to check out other bucket lists online at various blogs and websites. You can also read up on books about creating your own list. (Do a search on Amazon or eBay/Half.com to find books on the cheap.)

To be clear, your list can have whatever you want on it. It can also be as long as you want. In fact, having a bucket list with limits defeats the purpose of having a list, which is that there should be no limits to what you want to do in life.

There is a somewhat famous quote from the 19th and 20th century Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw — “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” In creating and crossing things off your bucket list, you will find you are doing just that — creating yourself, as well as creating the life you want to live. You might even find what it is you truly want to do with the rest of your life, whether that’s starting your own company, becoming more involved in charity work, or becoming a professional translator. The possibilities really are endless. And they should be. It’s your list, and it’s your life. You should fill it with things and experiences that make you happy and help you feel empowered and fulfilled.
